Why My Hormonal Ladyparts Are Voting For Obama

CNN posted an article yesterday that looked at research connecting voting and hormones – specifically, women’s hormones. The post, which has since been removed, was titled “Do Hormone’s Drive Women’s Votes?” and included the following gems:

While the campaigns eagerly pursue female voters, there’s something that may raise the chances for both presidential candidates that’s totally out of their control: women’s ovulation cycles.

You read that right. New research suggest that hormones may influence female voting choices differently, depending on whether a woman is single or in a committed relationship.

The researchers found that during the fertile time of the month, when levels of the hormone estrogen are high, single women appeared more likely to vote for Obama and committed women appeared more likely to vote for Romney, by a margin of at least 20%, Durante said. This seems to be the driver behind the researchers’ overall observation that single women were inclined toward Obama and committed women leaned toward Romney.

Here’s how Durante explains this: When women are ovulating, they “feel sexier,” and therefore lean more toward liberal attitudes on abortion and marriage equality. Married women have the same hormones firing, but tend to take the opposite viewpoint on these issues, she says.

“I think they’re overcompensating for the increase of the hormones motivating them to have sex with other men,” she said. It’s a way of convincing themselves that they’re not the type to give in to such sexual urges, she said.

My eyes still hurt from rolling so hard over this piece of “investigative journalism.” The one positive to come out of this was the immediate and hilarious reaction to the article from my Twitter feed. I can always count on them to help me laugh through the absurdity. My favorite:

So, ladies – please. When you’re at the polls on November 6th – especially if you’re at that delicate stage in your cycle – I implore you: do not to allow your hormones to drive you to the brink and vote for sweet, delicious, soul-satisfying cake.

However, let’s for a moment pretend to buy into the pseudo-science that connects hormones and voting. If that’s true and my cycles and hormones and the lady parts they affect truly do influence my voting, then it’s perfectly clear who I – and my hormonal lady parts – are supporting.

It’s no contest really. I would like a president who will protect and advocate not only for me as a person, but as a person with lady parts. While there are a variety of ways the two candidates differ on the issues, the biggest one in my hormone-addled mind is their stance on reproductive rights. To be honest, I have no clue what Romney really thinks. When he was governor of my state, he supported Planned Parenthood, and in turn made it clear that he supported Roe v. Wade, state funding for abortion, increased access to emergency contraception, insurance covered contraception and more. Now? He wants to defund Planned Parenthood and rip away any and all control I have over my lady parts. Will the Real Mitt Romney please stand up?

Thankfully, we currently have a president who gets it when it comes to the whole lady business. In fact, he even sees me as as more than the sum of our (lady) parts – go figure! President Obama has never gone back and forth on such a crucial issue, and more importantly, he makes his views on reproductive rights perfectly clear. Last night President Obama visited Jay Leno and responded to Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock’s completely messed up comment regarding rape.

This is exactly why you don’t want a bunch of politicians, mostly male, making decisions about women’s health care decisions. Women are capable of making these decisions, in consultation with their partners, with their doctors. And for politicians to want to intrude in this stuff, often times without any information, is a huge problem.

YES. There is absolutely no question over which candidate my hormonal lady bits will be steering me toward come November 6th.

This is just one reason why Obama is MY president. Why is he yours?*

  2. As a married liberal woman, I take SERIOUS issue with the whole “married women are always conservative bit.” Good to see that CNN at least had some semblance of standards and removed that “piece” (OF CRAP) from their site.

  3. Though I do not agree with all of Obama’s policies, the choice for me is clear. My mother and her friends were forced to have illegal abortions. Both my mother and father, now in there 80’s told me of these experiences and supported Planned Parenthood because they knew how important it was for all women especially women without much money to have access to contraception and if that fails to abortion. I often feel heartsick about what may happen to women’s rights overall and to the Arts, if President Obama isn’t reelected. I also wonder how people can’t see the direct connection between the right to contraception and abortion and the economy not to mention the Common Good. May it prevail.

    • I also don’t agree with all of President Obama’s policies, but when it comes to my health and my rights, I don’t see any other choice. I get fearful just thinking about what will happen in this country if he isn’t reelected next week…

    • Thanks for your kind words, Aliza – and thanks for sharing your post! Yours does a great job of explaining the various reasons beyond reproductive rights that earn President Obama a second term!
